How to add one or more extra callsign(s) to your AirMail MBO frequency list. Doing so, you can send and receive an unlimited quantity of PACTOR messages between your mailbox and the mailbox of the added call sign(s). The added stations cannot, however, handle e-mail via Internet.

BASIC INFORMATION

The latest PACTOR modem version is the P4dragon DR-7800, handling PACTOR-IV. This page is intended for users of version PCT-IIpro, handling PACTOR-III. The most important information for PACTOR users you will find at the following sites:

BAND PLAN REGION 1 http://iaru-r1.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=175&Itemid=127 Region 1 Europa   (2009.03.29)

AVAILABLE FREQUENCIES

When you select your PACTOR/AirMail frequencies (center frequencies, 1500Hz offset) you shall, when possible, comply with the IARU Region 1 band plan.  The band plan classifies digital emissions, like PACTOR, according to the required bandwidths.

PACTOR-II (P2) stays within 500 Hz.  PACTOR-III (P3) is about 5 times faster than P2 and, as a consequence, occupies 2400 Hz - equal to SSB phone signals.  But consider the fact that, compared to P2 in an emergency situation, P3 can transfer up to 5 times times as much life saving information per hour. And in addition to higher speed, the P3 signal handling and ARQ error correction allow error free reception at S/N levels down to minus 18 dB. Few if any digital and reasonably priced modems can compete at such levels.

Digital communication is not favoured by the DX-ers and SSB contest representatives at IARU. Hence, in the band plans, a true minimum of frequencies have been reserved for PACTOR-III and other digital emissions. To the disadvantage of ham operators concentrating on public welfare - by running emergency communication networks.

However, there are large sectors where all modes are allowed. While the SSB-ers may grumble about competition from digital modes, all emissions have - in principle - the same rights in the "ALLMODE" sectors. Each SSB or P3 signal does occupy the same 2.4kHz B/W, and neither of the two can boast of being the best spectrum saver. But PACTOR offers by far the best public service, when it comes to motivating the very existence of amateur radio. There is no reason not to share those sectors in a friendly manner.

IARU REGION 1 BAND PLAN

Please note that the frequency ranges, as shown in the below table, shall not be considered as irrevocable facts. Do consult the band plan (Region 1), where you will find sub-rules and comments which require too much clarification to fit inside this small table.

COMMENTS

80m: The range 3600-3620kHz is often used for SSB phone. However, 3580-3620kHz is the only part of the 80m band where the IARU Region 1 band plan (2009.04.01) clearly specifies digital traffic modes with up to 2700 Hz bandwidth - which includes PACTOR-III (P3). SSB phone is not mentioned as an option - digital traffic has priority. Phone stations in this range are not supported by the band plan.

40m: Some allmode ranges are not suitable for PACTOR III and similar digital traffic. Contests are preferred in the allmode ranges 7060-7100kHz and 7130-7200kHz. DX contacts have priority in 7175-7200kHz.

17m: The range 18111-18120kHz is, according to IARU Region 1 band plan (2009.04.01), the only part of the 17m band where digital traffic modes with B/W up to 2700 Hz - including PACTOR-III (p3) - are specified. SSB phone is not mentioned as an option - digital traffic has priority. Phone stations in this range are not supported by the band plan.

UPDATING THE FREQUENCY LIST

First, print a copy of these instructions. Then fetch the latest list of PACTOR MBO's from Joost at http://zs5s.net. Select BULLETINS and "Winlink-2000 Pactor MBO's WW (Accepting EMails)".

Save the list to a simple editing program, such as Notepad (Anteckningar). You will need an updated Frequency List to activate the most important PACTOR/AirMail features. While an operator is required on the sending side, the receiving side provides unmanned and automatic reception by scanning all sending frequencies listed for the call sign to be contacted.

Look through the list and delete any station(s) which you find unlikely to be reached from your position or route, considering your rig and antenna properties. You may add one or more non-MBO PACTOR stations with which you intend to have frequent contacts - like I have added the SAØM and SA8M stations in the below list sample. If you wish to keep in touch with either, you make the same addition(s).

The actual list contains nearly 60 MBO call signs. The frequencies are center frequencies, offset -1500Hz. The seventeen call signs shown here below are merely samples:

ADDING NEW CALL SIGN(S) TO THE AIRMAIL FREQUENCY LIST

Open the AirMail program. On its main page select "View", then "Frequency List" and click the "Text Format" tab.  Place the cursor fully left of the first call sign in the list, one empty line below the dashed line (- - - - - -).  Then mark and copy all information belonging to the first call sign. Insert the copy above the first call sign.

Read the "Explanation of codes used" at the top of the MBO list, and alter the inserted copy to show the new call sign and its belonging data. Make sure you have one empty line below the dashed line, and one empty line exists between the pasted information and the callsign which previously was the first.

When done, save.  Then click the "Freq.List" tab and mark the box(es) in front of the new entry (entries), click "Save" and "OK" and close all windows including the AirMail main page. Then restart AirMail, go back to the "Frequency List" and "Text Format" windows and check that all is OK.
